Gorkha: A substantial avalanche originating from the towering Manaslu Peak shook the tranquil surroundings of Samagaun in Chumanubri rural municipality-1, North Gorkha, this morning.

Local eyewitness Dizen Lama reported that the avalanche descended perilously close to Birendra Lake, nestled in the embrace of the majestic Manaslu mountain.

The catastrophic event, unfolding at 9:00 am on Sunday, triggered an overflow of water from the lake, cascading into the Budhigandaki River below. This sudden surge posed a grave threat of flooding along the banks of the Budhigandaki. The sheer magnitude of the avalanche raises concerns of potential damage to settlements downstream along the river.

Acting swiftly upon receiving reports of the avalanche, a contingent from the District Police Office Gorkha, led by Superintendent of Police Basudev Pathak, promptly mobilized to the site. Assessing the situation, it was discovered that the heightened water levels had inflicted damage upon a wooden bridge spanning the river. Fortunately, initial evaluations indicate no immediate risk of further devastation, as confirmed by Superintendent Pathak.

Chief District Officer of Gorkha, Bhola Dahal, issued a stern advisory urging residents to exercise caution in light of the escalated water flow within the Budhigandaki vicinity. Visitors are advised to refrain from venturing near the river area as a precautionary measure.

The Birendra Lake, situated at the base of the illustrious Manaslu Peak, renowned as the world's eighth highest summit towering at 8,163 meters, serves as the primary source of the Budhigandaki River, underlining its significance in the local geography and ecosystem.
